Capitol Square Project to hold public groundbreaking ceremony

Join us in front of the Wyoming Capitol at noon on Thursday, August 25 for the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Wyoming Capitol Square Project.

The Wyoming Capitol Square Project centers on the rehabilitation and restoration of the Capitol, which is a National Historic Landmark. The project includes the rehabilitation and expansion of the adjacent Herschler Building, as well as rehabilitation and expansion of the tunnel that connects the buildings, and relocation and expansion of the central utility plant, serving five state buildings.

This complex multi-year project will preserve the historic character of the Capitol, improve public access to the political process, and address needed life safety and building systems deficiencies. To prepare for construction, the Capitol and half of the Herschler Building have been vacated and the Capitol has been undergoing selective demolition and asbestos abatement. The project is now poised to launch into full-blown construction. For more information, visit www.wyomingcapitolsquare.com.

Co-chairmen of the Capitol Building Rehabilitation and Restoration Oversight Group Governor Matt Mead and Senator Tony Ross will kick off the groundbreaking ceremony with brief remarks starting at noon. The ceremony will be held in front of the Capitol at W 24th Street and Capitol Avenue. Please be aware that following roads will be closed for traffic starting at 11 am for the ceremony: W 24th Street between Central Avenue and Carey Avenue and Capitol Avenue from W 24th Street to W 22nd Street.

A reception and the opening of a new exhibit about the history of Wyoming’s Capitol and efforts to restore this historic gem will be held immediately following the groundbreaking ceremony at the Wyoming State Museum, located at 2301 Central Avenue.
